Nokia C6

 Nokia C6 Expected Q2 2010
One of a trio of new social networking phones from Nokia, the Nokia C6 is pretty much a straight replacement for the unloved Nokia N97, featuring a 3.2" touchscreen display, WiFi and 3.5G support, GPS and a 5 megapixel camera.
Nokia say that the C6 is aimed at social networkers, and it includes built in support for Facebook and Ovi plus popular webmail and instant messaging applications. But at it's heart, the C6 is a Symbian smartphone running the Symbian^1 operating system (also known as S60 5.0). Nokia say that the home screen is customizable to allow direct access to favourite features.

The technical specifications for the Nokia C6 are very close to the N97 - there a 3.2" 360 x 640 pixel touchscreen display, a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, HSDPA support, WiFi, integrated GPS, microSD expandable memory (with a 2GB card in the box), a media player, FM radio and 3.5mm AV connector.

Charging is done through a micro USB connector, hopefully Nokia have sorted out the quality problems with the connector which Nokia C6 has proved unreliable in some current models. A moderately large 1200 mAh battery is quoted as giving the Nokia C6 up to 5 hours talktime on 3G and 16 days standby time.

It's worth noting that the keyboard arrangement is more conventional that the N97, with four rows of keys and a small space bar in the middle. The navigation pad has moved from the left to the right and there are three keys on the front of the unit in the same style as the 5800. The large screen and slide out keyboard mean that this is a fairly heavy device at 150 grams.

The C6 is a fairly sophisticated bit of kit, but Nokia's naming convention puts it just one place about the mass-market C5 which indicates that Nokia are aiming the C6 squarely at the upper midrange market. The price is very appealing too.. all this technology

comes in at just €220 before tax and subsidy.

The C6 is hardly a radical phone, it's simply an improvement and evolution of what Nokia have produced before.. and this is probably what gives the phone its appeal. Nokia say that the C6 should be available during Q2 2010 in black and white colour schemes.

Nokia's N900: Potential Unrealized

Nokia N900

Nokia N900

Image Gallery (3 images)

From the first time we saw Nokia's N900 handheld computer we thought that it would be the ultimate communications device. With a large screen, fast processor, open OS and Firefox based browser, it seemed destined to become one of Nokia's major success stories. This was early September 2009, Nokia was showing off the device at their NokiaWorld conference, along with a new version of their N97 Symbian smartphone, and it looked like the N900 was the flagship product the the N97 SHOULD have been when it came out a few months earlier. We jumped on the bandwagon and were early supporters of the device.

Fast forward to the end of 2009 and it seems like the N97, now with it's 2.0 firmware, is the better device despite all the power user advantages that the N900 should be enjoying. Meanwhile Nokia can't seem to get the N900 software stable enough for executives and power users to depend upon.

Now, please try to understand, we REALLY want to like the N900. We also really like the way that Nokia has opened up the Maemo OS platform to developers. But it's just impossible to ignore the fact that Nokia isn't able to put enough power behind Maemo to compete with Google and their Android OS. In the same time that Nokia has managed to soft launch one Maemo device, there have been a dozen Android devices from multiple vendors, and 40 or 50 more scheduled for 2010. Additionally, there are over 20,000 applications available from third parties already for Android. There's a few quality applications for Maemo, but honestly you can count them on your fingers and toes, and none of them are really mission critical.

The software

Nearly all of our disappointments, with the exception of battery life which we'll address separately, are software related - although Nokia is putting out updates regularly. While the core applications are good, they show a general lack of maturity, and left us thinking that two thirds of the things that you'd like to be able to configure and change just weren't configurable.

In a recent example that it is being proactive on the software front, Nokia released a firmware update the adds support for the still widely used Exchange 2003 E-mail/calendar/address book (previously there was only support for Exchange 2007).

Advanced messaging including Skype, Google Talk, and SIP (VoIP) has been beautifully integrated into the native address book, dialer, and SMS/IM client, BUT isn't polished or configurable enough. For example, Skype is fully integrated as a core service for the N900. It works wonderfully for making Skype calls via WiFi, and offers Skype "chat" as well. This integration is so complete that the Skype status of you Skype contact shows up in the address book and on desktop icons.

It's impressive and powerful, but it also comes with address book integration problems that cause multiple entries for your contacts, and while these can be "merged" together using a feature of the N900 address book, these merged entries don't sync back to Exchange correctly. And good luck trying on "un-merge" two entries if you make a mistake during the merging process.

There's also the issue that any instant messaging "conversation" you have (including Skype chat) sets off your N900's alarms with every line of text received. In a more mature product there would be some way to have it "beep" when the conversation was started, but keep quiet after for subsequent messages. There's a general lack of font selectability in e-mail and chat applications, which is something that would add to usability but just isn't configurable. We could make an exhaustive list, but there's little point; the platform needs more time to mature.

Impressive browsing

Despite its shortcomings, there is potential with the N900, and it shines as a mobile browsing device. Nokia based the native browser on Mozilla's Firefox and it's the closest thing to a desktop browser we've ever seen before in a mobile device. In fact many of the add-ons built for the desktop version of Firefox will work with minimal changes on the N900. Multi-tasking support allows multiple applications to be running at once, and multiple browser sessions to be running at the same time. Switching between windows is fast and simple, and it's easy to launch new tasks without disturbing your existing ones.

Battery life

The N900 is approximately 20% bigger than Nokia's N97 flagship Symbian device, has a larger screen (800x600 vs. 640x360), and a faster processor, yet for some inexplicable reason Nokia chose to equip it with a smaller battery. While using the N900 configured for exchange syncing and with moderate calling and browsing, we found that we couldn't last a full day on a charge. It's almost as bad as an iPhone in this respect, but at least with the N900 you can swap in a second battery, the iPhone gives you no such option.

Overall, we'd have to say we're frustrated with the N900. We had high hopes for the device, and it seems that there's a lot of work still needed to bring the Maemo platform to maturity. The key to this will be to have core applications that are rock solid and to attract third party developers that will write applications for the platform. Nokia really isn't there yet with either of these, and frankly we're not sure how they can win the hearts and minds of the developers with the lead the Apple and Google have with their platforms. For now we're just going to wait and see how quickly Nokia can shave off the sharp corners on Maemo, improve the core applications on the N900, and generally make the device more usable. Until then, Nokia's N900's potential remains, for the most part, unrealized.

Super Cool Diamond Encrusted Mobile Phones From Athem

diamond-encrusted-cellphone Super Cool Diamond Encrusted Mobile Phones From Athem

We have just discovered two new bejeweled mobile phones; the Blackberry Bold and Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte by Athem. The phones have got diamond encrusted on them. BlackBerry Bold is also called as BlackBeauty and SnowWhite for the Nokia 8800. Both the phones look amazingly beautiful, despite looking very elegant and sophisticated.

The best part is that Athem offers customization for both the phones. They can be customized into various designs using natural diamonds, which include pink, yellow, black, champagne and white diamonds. Besides the customization part, you can also personalize the phones the way you want to. You can have your initials, lucky number, logos, etc. The diamond grading report in both the phones is accompanied by a world recognized and credible gemological lab.

diamond-encrusted-cellphone Super Cool Diamond Encrusted Mobile Phones From Athem

However, both the phones come in limited editions. Therefore, you will have to place your orders quickly lest the phones are snaffled by others. Considering the encrusted diamonds, the phones are likely to cost you a bomb! The starting price of the phones is $20,000.00. I like everything about the phones except the repulsive huge price tag, phew!

Nibiru touchscreen cellphone

. Smartphones have taken a leap beyond our novice thought of the mind. The intellect the engineers behind the outcome possess is pretty evident. The iPhone has reached as far as the 3GS and the Palm Pre has been competing notch for notch. Still, designers either for their grade projects or for the sheer passion to be in the league of their own, come up with cellphones not thought feasible. Such another introduction is the Nibiru cellphone concept from designer Andy Kurovets.

The distinctive feature of this innovatively designed touchscreen phone are its slide elements, the camera and the touchpad (for more comfortable surfing) sliding out from the rear, leaving the display wide open on the entire length of the cellphone. The MP3 player finds a place on one side, while the audio system (speaker) is placed on the opposite side. Such an accommodation for an MP3 player enables the user to change his favorite tracks without getting the phone out from the pocket. Are you ready for this neat project, I think it deserves to be on the shelves. Thoughts?

Nokia 6303 Classic

We reckon that for every gadget fan that wants a high-end smart phone there are ten people that want a phone that just makes calls and sends text messages. The Nokia 6303 is a phone designed for those ten people. Read our review to find out more.

What we like

We dropped the 6303 several times by mistake and it didn't seem bothered at all. Not only is it a tough little phone it also looks great and comes in a satisfying metal casing that protects it and adds a touch of class.

The screen is small but fine for reading text messages off and we love the 6303's keypad that offers enough space and definition to type on quickly. Equally efficient is the 6303's camera that isn't very advanced but takes better pics than the 6300's camera and includes an LED photo light.

Our favourite feature by far though it the addition of a standard headphone jack so that you can use your own headphones to listen to music or the FM radio.

What we don't like

Although we like the 6303 a lot it isn't very different to its predecessor, the 6300. We understand Nokia has kept things simple to keep the price down but 3G would have been nice. We also noticed a few scratches on the screen and would recommend not carrying it in the same pocket you carry your change in -- yes, we know that wasn't sensible but these things happen.

Conclusion

There isn't much we don't like about the 6303. It's a simple phone with simple ambitions and Nokia has added a few extras that make that little bit better than its predecessor, in particular a 3.5mm headphone jack. 3G would have been nice but we like the rest of it a lot so give it a thumbs up if you're looking for a basic phone that delivers a good texting and calling experience.

Nokia X3 Feature Phone Plays FM without Headset

http://www.mobilemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/nokiax.jpg
You know how the guys at Sony Ericsson officially took the wraps off the XPERIA X2 smartphone yesterday? I guess the team in Finland wanted to do them one better, because we are now taking a look at the Nokia X3 feature phone. It’s no smartphone, but it’s still quite clever.

The Nokia X3 is a part of the newest X-series of handsets from Nokia, joining the E-series business handhelds and N-series multimedia smartphones. The Nokia X3 will be running on S40 6th Edition and it is clearly targeting the music end of the scale with its dedicated media controls. I guess the X-series is the evolution of the XpressMusic series.

Some of the features include a slide-out numeric keypad, a 3.2-megapixel camera, tri-band GSM, full HTML browser with Flash Lite 3.0, microSD expansion, embedded stereo speakers, Bluetooth 2.1, 3.5mm audio jack, and the Comes With Music option for unlimited music service.

Interestingly, the stereo FM radio with RDS allows you to listen to the radio without having to plug in a headset. In all other phones, you need to use a headset because it functions as the antenna. Such is not the case with the Nokia X3, so that’s a plus.http://www.mobilemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/nokiax.jpg

Look for the Nokia X3 to sell for 115 Euro ($163) before taxes and subsidies when it launches in Q4 of this year.

Nokia 6300 - Eye Catching Sleek Stainless Body

http://www.shopcorn.co.uk/images/Telecom/Handsets/Nokia_6300_L_921.gifThe Nokia 6300 has eye catching sleek stainless still finishing and elegant design. It comes with a built in 2 megapixel camera, MP3 player, expandable memory etc to make a hold among its rivals.

Weighing just 91 gms the mobile phone is easy to carry in pocket. It has 2 inch TFT screen with resolution of 240 x 320 pixels display supporting 16.5 million colours to make one view videos and pictures with greater clarity. One can use its well designed keypad and 5 way navigation button to use its various features. With GPRS and EDGE one can get connected to internet for doing various online works. The phone has a modem which can be used for accessing internet over PC or laptop by using a data cable. The phone has good sound quality which makes one to enjoy music and FM radio while walking down or taking a break during work. Various games are also provided to keep users entertained.

One can enlist various features of Nokia 6300 as follows:
-2 megapixel camera
-Music playerNokia 6300
-FM radio
-TFT display screen
-Built in loudspeaker
-Voice commands and recording
-MP3 ringtones
-Java games
-Push to talk
-SMS, MMS, email, instant messaging and Nokia Xpress audio
-Personal organiser, calender etc
-Vibration alert
-Bluetooth, USB connections
-Alarm clock
-Countdown timer
-WAP, GPRS and EDGE technologies
-7.8 Mbytes memory with micro SD card slot
-Triband
-Flight mode
-Weighs 91g
-Dimensions 106 x 43 x 11.7 mm
-3.5 hrs talktime approx.
-Up to 14.5 days standby.

I used Nokia previously but changed to Motorola some time back and faced no problem with it. Now, when I went for an upgrade, I saw Nokia 6300 and ammused by its features I bought that mobile phone . The gadget just weighs 91 gms and its so slim that fits well in any pocket. The 106mm x 44mm x 12mm dimension give me good grip over it. The phone has 2 inches TFT screen with 16 million colours to give good picture quality. The 2.0 mega pixel camera provides 8 x digital zoom and recordes good quality videos. The internal memory of Nokia 6300 is 7.8 MB which can be expanded with memory card. I received a 128 MB memory card with its pack. The device has been packed in stainless still casing with black colour around. The keypad is also made of stainless steel and does not give problems even with big fingers. The camera is not bad but there is scope to provide a LED flash light, so that, one can take pictures at night also. I have a tendency of clicking pictures around and then putting them on my PC for print but I think as the mobile phone lacks flash light I will have to carry a camera as well. The battery back up is also good with long stand by and talk time. Over all, the phone has all those features which I wanted and I love to use this phone.

My dad purchased Nokia 6300 in March and since then I have been ammused with its different features. I have explored each and every feature to find out that the mobile phone is great piece of work by the company. The device has elegant design which comes in robust stainless steel casing. The phone has what Nokia is famous for, a straight forward one of the best performing handsets. The device has many features like 2.0 mega pixel camera, bluetooth connectivity, a media player and a range of applications which can be used for doing various works. The call quality is quite well than motorola V3 but not as good as Samsung U600. Its very easy to use various features as user interface is very good. The camera works good while in out doors but it shows poor quality when used indoor. In my opinion the camera is one of the biggest drawbacks of this phone. The screen is bright and gives good picture quality. When using USB port, the files load very quickly thus, the handset has got good processor speed. As the device has many multimedia features, I found its battery life quite low. One has to charge it every second day to keep using this magnificent device. Over all the Nokia has made a mobile phone which is for users of great taste and class.

Nokia N900

n900 closedNokia has announced the Nokia N900, a Maemo 5-powered device. Maemo 5 is the evolution of Nokia's previous generation of Internet Tablets and aims to occupy the space created by the convergence of mobile phones, laptops and the Internet. The N900 features a horizontal slider design with a three line QWERTY keyboard, a 3.5 inch WVGA (800 x 600) touch screen, ARM Cortex-A8 600 MHz processor with 256MB of RAM (and 768MB of virtual memory), 5.0 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, tri-band WCDMA and WiFi connectivity, integrated A-GPS, 3.5 mm AV jack (audio and TV-out), and 32GB of flash storage and a microSD card slot. The N900 will be available in select markets from October 2009 at a cost of €500 before taxes and subsidies.

compare

“With Linux software, Mozilla-based browser technology and now also with cellular connectivity, the Nokia N900 delivers a powerful mobile experience,” says Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President, Markets, Nokia. “The Nokia N900 shows where we are going with Maemo and we’ll continue to work with the community to push the software forward. What we have with Maemo is something that is fusing the power of the computer, the internet and the mobile phone, and it is great to see that it is evolving in exciting ways.”

n900-keyboard

In the press release, Nokia notes that Maemo is 'designed for computer-grade performance in a compact size, Maemo complements Nokia's other software platforms, such as Symbian, which powers Nokia's smartphones'. Clearly there's going to be much comment on Nokia's choice of Maemo as the platform to open up an evolving market segment. Essentially though, it is a reflection of the fact that as Nokia expands and diversifies its device portfolio, it becomes necessary to deploy multiple platforms. We'll be looking at this in more detail in the next few days.

Key features of the phone

Hardware:

  • ARM Cortex-A8 600MHz processor with up to 1GB of application memory (256MB RAM and 768MB of virtual memory).
  • 3.5 inch widescreen, 800 x 480 pixels resolution, resistive touch.
  • Dimensions of 110.9 x 59.8 x 18mm (19.5mm at camera), weight of 181g. This is shorter, but wider, thicker and heavier than the N97 (117 x 55.3 x 15.9mm at 150g). It's significantly smaller than the N810 (72 x 128 x 14mm at 226g), the previous Maemo device.
  • Horziontal slider form factor with 3 line QWERTY keyboard on the lower slide and integrated (around the camera) device 'kick' stand.
  • WiFi (b/g) (includes UPnP support) and HSDPA connectivity (triband WCDMA 900/1700/2100 and quadband GSM). The 1700 band is for T-Mobile USA (which suggests the N900 is headed for a carrier in the US to go up against Palm Pre (Sprint) and iPhone (AT&T).
    n900 music
To be clear - this is a phone, in contrast to previous Maemo devices which had no cellular telephony functions. However, in contrast to Nokia's Symbian smartphones, it might be considered a mobile computing device first, then a phone.
  • 5 megapixel main camera (2.8 aperture, 5.2 focal length, dual LED flash and video light), with Carl Zeiss Tessar optics, video capture at WVGA (800 x 480) at up to 25 frames per second. Camera supports geotagging, tagging with keyword and ability to share to Ovi and Flickr.
  • Integrated GPS with A-GPS.
  • Integrated FM trasnmitter.
  • Bluetooth 2.1, including full support for stereo headsets (A2DP and AVRCP).
  • Nokia 3.5mm AV connector for audio input/output and TV-Out.
  • microUSB for connectivity and charging.
  • 32GB of internal flash storage, microSD card slot.
  • Nokia BL-5J battery with 1320 mAh capacity.

Nokia N97 Mini

06cbe_nokia-n97-n97-mini-rumorIs it possible that the Nokia N97 Mini will be launched today? It’s a real possibility, as Nokia has already announced the Nokia Booklet 3G and Nokia N900 Maemo this week (not forgetting the Nokia 5230), so we could be ripe for another great day. Join us after the break to find out why we think the Nokia N97 Mini could launch today…

A moderator on the Vodafone forums said the carrier would not be getting the touchscreen and QWERTY keyboard wielding N97, but would instead be launching the N97 Mini later this year, due to its "competitive pricing". No additional info was revealed about the handset and the comment has since been edited, along with users replies.

The Nokia N97 Mini could be on its way today, at least we hope it is. After all, Nokia seems to have ramped up expectation about Nokia World 2009 to fever pitch this week by announcing three new products – the Nokia Booklet 3G, the Nokia 5230 and last but not least the Nokia N900 Maemo tablet.
We’re thinking the Nokia N97 Mini may well follow suit, largely because the same French site, BeGeek, who managed to get its hands on the official image of the Nokia N900 ahead of schedule, also managed the same trick with the official Nokia N97 Mini image is.

The Nokia Booklet 3G mini-laptop has been announced ahead of Nokia World 2009 and we’re all pretty excited about getting our hands on what looks like a super-stylish and always connected super-netbook. If you’ve already seen out image gallery, of the Nokia Booklet 3G, then you need to check out the video and be stunned at what’s coming down the pipe later this year…

The Nokia Booklet 3G looks pretty amazing. The design is definitely something that mixes easy of use with style and grace. If you want to see what this 10-inch mini-laptop looks like in the flesh, then check out the video below and see for yourself. The Nokia Booklet 3G mixes everything we want from a Nokia mini-laptop, combining a HD Ready screen, a near full-size keyboard and all of our favourite Nokia Ovi apps pre-installed. Nokia is claiming the Nokia Booklet 3G will last 12 hours at a go from the battery, which is simply amazing and means you’ll be able to surf and stay in touch longer than just about any other mini-laptop out there.

We’ll get the full lowdown on the Nokia Booklet 3G at Nokia World 2009.

Nokia 6700 classic

Nokia-6700-classicNokia today announced the Nokia 6700 classic, the Nokia 6303 classic and the Nokia 2700 classic, three devices that build on the formula that made Nokia the world leader in mobile phones. The new trio combines the functionality and user experience required in today's hectic times, with premium designs and materials that make them the most beautiful, well built and competitively priced offerings available.

Leading the new collection is the Nokia 6700 classic, which continues the legacy of one of the company's most successful products, the Nokia 6300. "The Nokia 6300 raised the bar in terms of design and premium materials when it arrived in 2006 and topped all sales records for a mid-range mobile phone. The Nokia 6700 moves that bar even higher with a beautiful, slim design and perfectly balanced practicality," said Soren Petersen, Senior Vice President, Nokia. "Our new arrival shares the same 'DNA' as its predecessor and we believe that it will be one of our best selling devices in 2009," continued Petersen.

The Nokia 6700 combines smooth surfaces, rich materials and precisely crafted parts with a full metal keymat which completes the premium finish. Improving on all areas of its forerunner, the Nokia 6700 comes with a 5 megapixel camera, assisted GPS navigation with Nokia Maps, and high speed data access meaning sharing images or video is faster and easier than ever. At an estimated retail price of EUR 235, before taxes and subsidies, the Nokia 6700 addresses the original Nokia 6300 customer need and aspiration level perfectly.

At an estimated retail price of EUR 135, before taxes and subsidies, the Nokia 6303 classic is ideal for people that see the current value proposition of the Nokia 6300. The 3.2 megapixel camera comes to life on the large 2.2 inch screen, and with pre-loaded Nokia Maps, the Nokia 6303 combines a long list of features with excellent battery performance. Added to everything else, people can plug any music accessory into the standard 3.5 mm audio jack and have a fully fledged mobile music player able to carry thousands of their favorite tracks.

Rounding off the new arrivals is the Nokia 2700 classic which, at and estimated price of EUR 65 before taxes and subsidies, is one of Nokia's most affordable, full featured handsets. Offering up to 2GB of storage via the memory card slot, the phone also has an integrated digital music player and a 2.0 megapixel camera, making it equally competent for imaging and music. "These features mean people can save, access and share files in hundreds of formats via Nokia's online service, Share on Ovi, or a number of other websites. The rich features and simple interface mean that in many cases, the Nokia 2700 classic will provide its owner's first Internet experience," concluded Petersen. All three devices are expected to ship in the second quarter of 2009.

Nokia 5230

 Nokia 5230

How much would you pay for a Nokia touchscreen phone with a 3.2" display, GPS and 3.5G support? You would think that it might be quite expensive.. but you'd be wrong, because the new Nokia 5230 is priced at just €149 before tax and subsidy.

There are a few compromises to get the handset down to this price, but what is really surprising is just how many features are included. It's much cheaper than the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and even the new Nokia 5530 XpressMusic, but it is still competitive with both of those devices.

The display is a 3.2" 640 x 360 pixel touch-sensitive panel, almost identical to that on the 5800. The 5230 comes with A-GPS and Ovi Maps 3.0, you should be able to use it with Google Maps too if you want. The 5230 also supports dual-band UMTS and HSDPA with a maximum download speed of 3.6 Mbps. Media playback is pretty comprehensive, and there's a 3.5mm audio socket too. Because this is a Symbian S60 smartphone, then there is a wide range of software available to download, plus a useful built-in web browser, email client and even support for Microsoft Exchange.

Nokia 5230The camera is only a 2 megapixel unit when it comes to stills photos, but it can record video at up to 640 x 480 pixels at 30 frames per second which is very good. The Nokia 5230 also lacks WiFi connectivity, but that would be asking a lot for a phone of this price. The large 1320 mAh battery is meant to drive the 5230 for up to 4.3 hours talktime and 19 days standby time on 3G, and the size and weight are very similar to that of the existing 5800.

Memory on the Nokia 5230 is expandable up to 16GB, although there's no memory card in the standard sales package. There is a stereo wired headset included in the box, but at this price don't expect any other extras on top of that.

If the 5800 is too expensive for you, and you don't need WiFi and can manage with a fairly basic stills camera then the 5230 looks like an excellent choice. The inclusion of Exchange support along with a reasonable battery life could make this an interesting option for business users too.

Nokia say that the 5230 should be available during Q4 2009 in a wide variety of colours, priced at €149 SIM-free before tax. There will also be a "Comes with Music" version priced at €259 which comes with an unlimited music download subscription.
