Nokia's N900: Potential Unrealized

Nokia N900

Nokia N900

Image Gallery (3 images)

From the first time we saw Nokia's N900 handheld computer we thought that it would be the ultimate communications device. With a large screen, fast processor, open OS and Firefox based browser, it seemed destined to become one of Nokia's major success stories. This was early September 2009, Nokia was showing off the device at their NokiaWorld conference, along with a new version of their N97 Symbian smartphone, and it looked like the N900 was the flagship product the the N97 SHOULD have been when it came out a few months earlier. We jumped on the bandwagon and were early supporters of the device.

Fast forward to the end of 2009 and it seems like the N97, now with it's 2.0 firmware, is the better device despite all the power user advantages that the N900 should be enjoying. Meanwhile Nokia can't seem to get the N900 software stable enough for executives and power users to depend upon.

Now, please try to understand, we REALLY want to like the N900. We also really like the way that Nokia has opened up the Maemo OS platform to developers. But it's just impossible to ignore the fact that Nokia isn't able to put enough power behind Maemo to compete with Google and their Android OS. In the same time that Nokia has managed to soft launch one Maemo device, there have been a dozen Android devices from multiple vendors, and 40 or 50 more scheduled for 2010. Additionally, there are over 20,000 applications available from third parties already for Android. There's a few quality applications for Maemo, but honestly you can count them on your fingers and toes, and none of them are really mission critical.

The software

Nearly all of our disappointments, with the exception of battery life which we'll address separately, are software related - although Nokia is putting out updates regularly. While the core applications are good, they show a general lack of maturity, and left us thinking that two thirds of the things that you'd like to be able to configure and change just weren't configurable.

In a recent example that it is being proactive on the software front, Nokia released a firmware update the adds support for the still widely used Exchange 2003 E-mail/calendar/address book (previously there was only support for Exchange 2007).

Advanced messaging including Skype, Google Talk, and SIP (VoIP) has been beautifully integrated into the native address book, dialer, and SMS/IM client, BUT isn't polished or configurable enough. For example, Skype is fully integrated as a core service for the N900. It works wonderfully for making Skype calls via WiFi, and offers Skype "chat" as well. This integration is so complete that the Skype status of you Skype contact shows up in the address book and on desktop icons.

It's impressive and powerful, but it also comes with address book integration problems that cause multiple entries for your contacts, and while these can be "merged" together using a feature of the N900 address book, these merged entries don't sync back to Exchange correctly. And good luck trying on "un-merge" two entries if you make a mistake during the merging process.

There's also the issue that any instant messaging "conversation" you have (including Skype chat) sets off your N900's alarms with every line of text received. In a more mature product there would be some way to have it "beep" when the conversation was started, but keep quiet after for subsequent messages. There's a general lack of font selectability in e-mail and chat applications, which is something that would add to usability but just isn't configurable. We could make an exhaustive list, but there's little point; the platform needs more time to mature.

Impressive browsing

Despite its shortcomings, there is potential with the N900, and it shines as a mobile browsing device. Nokia based the native browser on Mozilla's Firefox and it's the closest thing to a desktop browser we've ever seen before in a mobile device. In fact many of the add-ons built for the desktop version of Firefox will work with minimal changes on the N900. Multi-tasking support allows multiple applications to be running at once, and multiple browser sessions to be running at the same time. Switching between windows is fast and simple, and it's easy to launch new tasks without disturbing your existing ones.

Battery life

The N900 is approximately 20% bigger than Nokia's N97 flagship Symbian device, has a larger screen (800x600 vs. 640x360), and a faster processor, yet for some inexplicable reason Nokia chose to equip it with a smaller battery. While using the N900 configured for exchange syncing and with moderate calling and browsing, we found that we couldn't last a full day on a charge. It's almost as bad as an iPhone in this respect, but at least with the N900 you can swap in a second battery, the iPhone gives you no such option.

Overall, we'd have to say we're frustrated with the N900. We had high hopes for the device, and it seems that there's a lot of work still needed to bring the Maemo platform to maturity. The key to this will be to have core applications that are rock solid and to attract third party developers that will write applications for the platform. Nokia really isn't there yet with either of these, and frankly we're not sure how they can win the hearts and minds of the developers with the lead the Apple and Google have with their platforms. For now we're just going to wait and see how quickly Nokia can shave off the sharp corners on Maemo, improve the core applications on the N900, and generally make the device more usable. Until then, Nokia's N900's potential remains, for the most part, unrealized.

The Nokia WH-500 has an over-the-ear design
What we’ll be looking at in this review is the Nokia WH-500 – a new stereo headset by the Finnish manufacturer. It can be used for both handling your handsfree calls and listening to music. This headband-style headset has decent dimensions and it will hopefully perform well in the upcoming tests.

The device has an over-the-ear design, and is available only in black color. It is very comfortable to wear because of the light materials used in making it, comprised mostly of nice-feeling plastic. The swiveling ear-cups gently touch your ears, and in the same time cling firmly enough onto them. The wire from the ear-cups ends in a 3.5mm audio jack, and a 2.5mm adapter is also available, adding compatibility with devices, featuring that port. The headset has a hands-free speakerphone and easily accessible controls, which are located on a module on the wire. The module features six buttons in all: a volume rocker, play/pause and track selection keys and a call key. It should be mentioned that this particular headset works best with Nokia phones, since the buttons do not function when connected to other manufacturers’ phones, although it still produces high-quality sound.

Nokia clarifies: N900 can be customized

n900Nokia said that it will provide carrier customization for its Linux-based smartphone, the N900, noting that reports to the contrary were inaccurate. Two days ago a Reuters report, quoting a Nokia executive, suggested that the handset maker would not alter the phone's Maemo software to suit the needs of operators.

In a post today on the company's Nokia Connections blog, Nokia said that "a few people are getting ahead of themselves" in terms of drawing conclusions about the company's plans for the N900. "While we have not announced immediate plans to offer an operator variant for the N900, there are many customization points for operators on the N900," the company said. "It would be absolutely incorrect to assume that we will not offer operators the ability to tailor future Maemo devices to suit their needs."

Nokia said its goal with Maemo is to focus on the consumer experience by integrating applications, and working with developers, publishers and operators.

Thus, Nokia's post appears to be a repudiation of comments by a Nokia executive to Reuters.

"Very clearly Apple, Android ... are a whole lot less about providing customization to the operators and a whole lot more about providing a really cool, compelling value proposition to the end-consumer," said David Rivas, Nokia's vice president for devices R&D, according to a Reuters report from Sept. 9. "We have an opportunity, that we are going to take advantage of, with Maemo platform to play the game a little bit more along those lines than with Symbian lines."

n900Since Nokia World, there has been a lot of positive buzz and discussion around Nokia’s operating systems. However, in the past couple of days, there have been some speculative stories about Nokia’s operator customization strategy for Maemo. Many reports have erroneously suggested that Nokia will not support operator customization for Maemo devices – a fact that is simply incorrect.

Perhaps a bit of background is needed here.

Nokia has always taken a very pragmatic approach when it comes to operating systems in mobile devices – ranging from Series 30, our basic OS for voice-optimized phones, to Windows 7, a logical choice for our Booklet 3G mini-laptop.

For example, in smartphones, we continue to believe that Symbian is the best alternative in enabling compelling mobile experiences for hundreds of millions of people around the world. Nokia currently offers the industry’s broadest range of smartphone models based on the Symbian OS. One of Symbian’s greatest strengths is its breadth – Symbian supports more than 40 languages, with multiple form factors at a range of price points, and support both touch, qwerty as well as the traditional ITU keypad. Symbian has been specifically developed to support operator customization, which enables operators to highlight their brand identity and services to their customers. Our commitment to Symbian was underscored last year when we acquired the company and established the Symbian Foundation to ensure its future development as an open source platform.

In 2005, Nokia introduced the first Nokia Internet Tablet. This Tablet was based on Maemo software, which took its cues from the desktop computer, as opposed to the mobile phone. Maemo was developed for multi-tasking and to create the best possible browsing experience in a hand-held device.

Last month, Nokia unveiled the Nokia N900, based on the 4th generation of Maemo software. The N900 is a natural evolution of our Internet-optimized devices and marks the first time that we have added cellular connectivity to a Maemo device.

Fast forward to today…

This week, there have been a number of speculative stories suggesting that Nokia will not allow for operator customization of Maemo devices. Seems a few people are getting ahead of themselves. As we have said over the past couple of weeks, our plan with Maemo is to focus on the consumer experience – integrating applications and services from Nokia, our broad community of developers and publishers and, of course, from our operator customers. While we have not announced immediate plans to offer an operator variant for the N900, there are many customization points for operators on the N900. It would be absolutely incorrect to assume that we will not offer operators the ability to tailor future Maemo devices to suit their needs.

Of course, it is fantastic to see the positive buzz building around Maemo and the Nokia N900, so we wanted to clear up these few important details that appear to have been misunderstood.

Nokia Comes With Hype

Europe : Now that Nokia World is over for a another year we look at what all the hype means after the dust has settled. Of course, Nokia wont take kindly to other phone manufactures such as Apple and Blackberry trying to knock them off their perch and at Nokia World we saw a thrust from Nokia like the Trojans forcing back the Greeks in the remake of the film Troy. Its fair to say that Nokia were caught out-of-sync with the launch of the Apple iPhone and a number of the new Blackberries from Research in Motion.

We clearly saw from last week that Nokia are now “homed in” with a global strategy and the smartphone market clearly needs defending as well as an attack from Nokia.

This strategy can be broken down as follows :

Nokia Comes with Music is a very important area for Nokia and saw the launch of the Nokia X3 Slider and the Nokia X6 which will become the flagship products which focus the mind on Nokia Comes with Music.

Nokia ventured into new ground as it unveiled its first smartphone – the N900 - which uses the open-source Linux operating system and a new Nokia 3G Netbook – Nokia’s first ever laptop. The Nokia N900 seems to launch Nokia headlong into a crash with the iPhone and the Blackberries as this is Nokia’s latest challenger in the really high end smartphone arena. Nokia has clawed back lost ground in the global smartphone battle in the last 6 months and intends to go even better. The Nokia N97 Mini sneaked into play too and was well received.

Nokia is in pole position as it became the first mobile phone manufacturer to launch a netbook and this clearly shows a transformation in Nokia’s roadmap for the future. Another area where Nokia has ventured is in the area of money – mobile money. Nokia Money is a new mobile money service offering people, with a 3G mobile phone or device, a basic financial application service.

So what did the Nokia World hype achieve ? Well immediately on launch of the Nokia 3G Netbook, Nokia’s stock price rose 6% but only time will tell.

While Nokia were parading at Nokia World the other mobile phone manufacturers were busy themselves launching new 3G mobile phones such as :

Nokia X3 Feature Phone Plays FM without Headset

http://www.mobilemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/nokiax.jpg
You know how the guys at Sony Ericsson officially took the wraps off the XPERIA X2 smartphone yesterday? I guess the team in Finland wanted to do them one better, because we are now taking a look at the Nokia X3 feature phone. It’s no smartphone, but it’s still quite clever.

The Nokia X3 is a part of the newest X-series of handsets from Nokia, joining the E-series business handhelds and N-series multimedia smartphones. The Nokia X3 will be running on S40 6th Edition and it is clearly targeting the music end of the scale with its dedicated media controls. I guess the X-series is the evolution of the XpressMusic series.

Some of the features include a slide-out numeric keypad, a 3.2-megapixel camera, tri-band GSM, full HTML browser with Flash Lite 3.0, microSD expansion, embedded stereo speakers, Bluetooth 2.1, 3.5mm audio jack, and the Comes With Music option for unlimited music service.

Interestingly, the stereo FM radio with RDS allows you to listen to the radio without having to plug in a headset. In all other phones, you need to use a headset because it functions as the antenna. Such is not the case with the Nokia X3, so that’s a plus.http://www.mobilemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/nokiax.jpg

Look for the Nokia X3 to sell for 115 Euro ($163) before taxes and subsidies when it launches in Q4 of this year.

Nokia N900

n900 closedNokia has announced the Nokia N900, a Maemo 5-powered device. Maemo 5 is the evolution of Nokia's previous generation of Internet Tablets and aims to occupy the space created by the convergence of mobile phones, laptops and the Internet. The N900 features a horizontal slider design with a three line QWERTY keyboard, a 3.5 inch WVGA (800 x 600) touch screen, ARM Cortex-A8 600 MHz processor with 256MB of RAM (and 768MB of virtual memory), 5.0 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, tri-band WCDMA and WiFi connectivity, integrated A-GPS, 3.5 mm AV jack (audio and TV-out), and 32GB of flash storage and a microSD card slot. The N900 will be available in select markets from October 2009 at a cost of €500 before taxes and subsidies.

compare

“With Linux software, Mozilla-based browser technology and now also with cellular connectivity, the Nokia N900 delivers a powerful mobile experience,” says Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President, Markets, Nokia. “The Nokia N900 shows where we are going with Maemo and we’ll continue to work with the community to push the software forward. What we have with Maemo is something that is fusing the power of the computer, the internet and the mobile phone, and it is great to see that it is evolving in exciting ways.”

n900-keyboard

In the press release, Nokia notes that Maemo is 'designed for computer-grade performance in a compact size, Maemo complements Nokia's other software platforms, such as Symbian, which powers Nokia's smartphones'. Clearly there's going to be much comment on Nokia's choice of Maemo as the platform to open up an evolving market segment. Essentially though, it is a reflection of the fact that as Nokia expands and diversifies its device portfolio, it becomes necessary to deploy multiple platforms. We'll be looking at this in more detail in the next few days.

Key features of the phone

Hardware:

  • ARM Cortex-A8 600MHz processor with up to 1GB of application memory (256MB RAM and 768MB of virtual memory).
  • 3.5 inch widescreen, 800 x 480 pixels resolution, resistive touch.
  • Dimensions of 110.9 x 59.8 x 18mm (19.5mm at camera), weight of 181g. This is shorter, but wider, thicker and heavier than the N97 (117 x 55.3 x 15.9mm at 150g). It's significantly smaller than the N810 (72 x 128 x 14mm at 226g), the previous Maemo device.
  • Horziontal slider form factor with 3 line QWERTY keyboard on the lower slide and integrated (around the camera) device 'kick' stand.
  • WiFi (b/g) (includes UPnP support) and HSDPA connectivity (triband WCDMA 900/1700/2100 and quadband GSM). The 1700 band is for T-Mobile USA (which suggests the N900 is headed for a carrier in the US to go up against Palm Pre (Sprint) and iPhone (AT&T).
    n900 music
To be clear - this is a phone, in contrast to previous Maemo devices which had no cellular telephony functions. However, in contrast to Nokia's Symbian smartphones, it might be considered a mobile computing device first, then a phone.
  • 5 megapixel main camera (2.8 aperture, 5.2 focal length, dual LED flash and video light), with Carl Zeiss Tessar optics, video capture at WVGA (800 x 480) at up to 25 frames per second. Camera supports geotagging, tagging with keyword and ability to share to Ovi and Flickr.
  • Integrated GPS with A-GPS.
  • Integrated FM trasnmitter.
  • Bluetooth 2.1, including full support for stereo headsets (A2DP and AVRCP).
  • Nokia 3.5mm AV connector for audio input/output and TV-Out.
  • microUSB for connectivity and charging.
  • 32GB of internal flash storage, microSD card slot.
  • Nokia BL-5J battery with 1320 mAh capacity.

Nokia N97 Mini

06cbe_nokia-n97-n97-mini-rumorIs it possible that the Nokia N97 Mini will be launched today? It’s a real possibility, as Nokia has already announced the Nokia Booklet 3G and Nokia N900 Maemo this week (not forgetting the Nokia 5230), so we could be ripe for another great day. Join us after the break to find out why we think the Nokia N97 Mini could launch today…

A moderator on the Vodafone forums said the carrier would not be getting the touchscreen and QWERTY keyboard wielding N97, but would instead be launching the N97 Mini later this year, due to its "competitive pricing". No additional info was revealed about the handset and the comment has since been edited, along with users replies.

The Nokia N97 Mini could be on its way today, at least we hope it is. After all, Nokia seems to have ramped up expectation about Nokia World 2009 to fever pitch this week by announcing three new products – the Nokia Booklet 3G, the Nokia 5230 and last but not least the Nokia N900 Maemo tablet.
We’re thinking the Nokia N97 Mini may well follow suit, largely because the same French site, BeGeek, who managed to get its hands on the official image of the Nokia N900 ahead of schedule, also managed the same trick with the official Nokia N97 Mini image is.

The Nokia Booklet 3G mini-laptop has been announced ahead of Nokia World 2009 and we’re all pretty excited about getting our hands on what looks like a super-stylish and always connected super-netbook. If you’ve already seen out image gallery, of the Nokia Booklet 3G, then you need to check out the video and be stunned at what’s coming down the pipe later this year…

The Nokia Booklet 3G looks pretty amazing. The design is definitely something that mixes easy of use with style and grace. If you want to see what this 10-inch mini-laptop looks like in the flesh, then check out the video below and see for yourself. The Nokia Booklet 3G mixes everything we want from a Nokia mini-laptop, combining a HD Ready screen, a near full-size keyboard and all of our favourite Nokia Ovi apps pre-installed. Nokia is claiming the Nokia Booklet 3G will last 12 hours at a go from the battery, which is simply amazing and means you’ll be able to surf and stay in touch longer than just about any other mini-laptop out there.

We’ll get the full lowdown on the Nokia Booklet 3G at Nokia World 2009.

Nokia 6700 classic

Nokia-6700-classicNokia today announced the Nokia 6700 classic, the Nokia 6303 classic and the Nokia 2700 classic, three devices that build on the formula that made Nokia the world leader in mobile phones. The new trio combines the functionality and user experience required in today's hectic times, with premium designs and materials that make them the most beautiful, well built and competitively priced offerings available.

Leading the new collection is the Nokia 6700 classic, which continues the legacy of one of the company's most successful products, the Nokia 6300. "The Nokia 6300 raised the bar in terms of design and premium materials when it arrived in 2006 and topped all sales records for a mid-range mobile phone. The Nokia 6700 moves that bar even higher with a beautiful, slim design and perfectly balanced practicality," said Soren Petersen, Senior Vice President, Nokia. "Our new arrival shares the same 'DNA' as its predecessor and we believe that it will be one of our best selling devices in 2009," continued Petersen.

At an estimated retail price of EUR 235, before taxes and subsidies, the Nokia 6700 addresses the original Nokia 6300 customer need and aspiration level perfectly.

At an estimated retail price of EUR 135, before taxes and subsidies, the Nokia 6303 classic is ideal for people that see the current value proposition of the Nokia 6300. The 3.2 megapixel camera comes to life on the large 2.2 inch screen, and with pre-loaded Nokia Maps, the Nokia 6303 combines a long list of features with excellent battery performance. Added to everything else, people can plug any music accessory into the standard 3.5 mm audio jack and have a fully fledged mobile music player able to carry thousands of their favorite tracks.

Offering up to 2GB of storage via the memory card slot, the phone also has an integrated digital music player and a 2.0 megapixel camera, making it equally competent for imaging and music. "These features mean people can save, access and share files in hundreds of formats via Nokia's online service, Share on Ovi, or a number of other websites. The rich features and simple interface mean that in many cases, the Nokia 2700 classic will provide its owner's first Internet experience," concluded Petersen. All three devices are expected to ship in the second quarter of 2009.

Nokia 5230

 Nokia 5230

How much would you pay for a Nokia touchscreen phone with a 3.2" display, GPS and 3.5G support? You would think that it might be quite expensive.. but you'd be wrong, because the new Nokia 5230 is priced at just €149 before tax and subsidy.

There are a few compromises to get the handset down to this price, but what is really surprising is just how many features are included. It's much cheaper than the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and even the new Nokia 5530 XpressMusic, but it is still competitive with both of those devices.

The display is a 3.2" 640 x 360 pixel touch-sensitive panel, almost identical to that on the 5800. The 5230 comes with A-GPS and Ovi Maps 3.0, you should be able to use it with Google Maps too if you want. The 5230 also supports dual-band UMTS and HSDPA with a maximum download speed of 3.6 Mbps. Media playback is pretty comprehensive, and there's a 3.5mm audio socket too. Because this is a Symbian S60 smartphone, then there is a wide range of software available to download, plus a useful built-in web browser, email client and even support for Microsoft Exchange.

Nokia 5230The camera is only a 2 megapixel unit when it comes to stills photos, but it can record video at up to 640 x 480 pixels at 30 frames per second which is very good. The Nokia 5230 also lacks WiFi connectivity, but that would be asking a lot for a phone of this price. The large 1320 mAh battery is meant to drive the 5230 for up to 4.3 hours talktime and 19 days standby time on 3G, and the size and weight are very similar to that of the existing 5800.

Memory on the Nokia 5230 is expandable up to 16GB, although there's no memory card in the standard sales package. There is a stereo wired headset included in the box, but at this price don't expect any other extras on top of that.

If the 5800 is too expensive for you, and you don't need WiFi and can manage with a fairly basic stills camera then the 5230 looks like an excellent choice. The inclusion of Exchange support along with a reasonable battery life could make this an interesting option for business users too.

Nokia say that the 5230 should be available during Q4 2009 in a wide variety of colours, priced at €149 SIM-free before tax. There will also be a "Comes with Music" version priced at €259 which comes with an unlimited music download subscription.
