Revival s60v1/v2 [RPG] s60 J2ME

Revival is a mix of all strategy aspects rolled into one-you get to build towns, research sciences, nurture industrial strength, trade, maintain your empire’s health and wellbeing, train soldiers, build battlements, attack other cities(for no reason), and eventually become the leader of the known universe over a huge game map. This is all in favour of a new futuristic discovery project, in which you have discovered new alien planets with familiar, albeit primitive inhabitants (as in they’re early humans). Your job is to basically bring them up to speed with the customs, technology and excellent TV shows of the modern world. Of course, you’ll also have to cope with your empire’s setbacks-things like earthquakes, viral epidemics etc.

The graphics are quite well suited. As a lot of aspects have to be included on the screen at once, you won’t be seeing much in the way of animation-a lot like Warcraft 2 on the PC, actually. The game map is quite detailed, though. Apart from the initial fog of war, you’ll be seeing arctic tundra, deserts and mountains, all with little details, like animals, to boot. The sound is somewhat limited, but not abysmal- you’re given a single tune which loops, which is nice, along with .WAV sound effects for attacks and the like.

Grand Theft Auto makes for more carnage on the iPhone

Grand Theft Auto makes for more carnage on the iPhoneGrand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars [App Store] was quietly released into the App Store this evening. Chinatown Wars for the iPhone seems to lie somewhere in between the DS and PSP versions in regards to graphical quality, but as far as pure GTA gameplay, everything so far seems intact. (Complete with an awful lot of swearing.)

Much like other versions of the game, screenshots barely do it justice. Liberty City in motion on the iPhone is amazing, and all the jagged edges in the screenshots quickly fade away when you're racing down a street, under elevated train tracks, and through alleys as you escape the police. The realtime clock in-game also changes the lighting of the city, shifting from the orange glow of a sunset to the street lights turning on at night. It really looks awesome.

IMG_0359

The basic premise of the game involves a man named Huang Lee, the son of a Triad gang boss who was recently sent to sleep with the fishes. He flies in to Liberty City with a heirloom sword his father won in a poker game, deciding to deliver it to his uncle. Of course things never go as planned, and not long after landing Huang finds himself in the middle of a gunfight and winds up getting kidnapped. After stealing the sword, the assailants assume Huang is dead, and looking to dispose of the body drive the car he's in off the side of a pier. In the same vein of other GTA games, story isn't really anything revolutionary, but it gets the job done.

Chinatown Wars is controlled very similar to Gameloft's Gangstar, with virtual buttons and a joystick that handle all the driving, running, shooting, and other activities in game. The iPhone port of Chinatown Wars retains the stylus minigames that filled the DS version, appearing in a little popups where you do things like tap to smash the window of the car you were trapped in at the beginning of the game, slide your finger around to turn a screwdriver to start a car you're stealing, etc.

IMG_0354When the Nintendo DS version was first released, I devoted hours to playing through the game. So far the iPhone port seems like a faithful reproduction with quite a few expletives. I obviously don't have the full text scripts of both games to compare, but everything I've come across so far has fit with what you would expect out of a GTA game, and it would appear that very little if anything was actually censored for the App Store release.

Chinatown Wars seems to be a complete GTA experience. You have your apartment that serves as your character's hub with a "Fruit" computer you can check emails on, a garage you can stash a car in, and when you're on the road there is a full GPS system with a map of Liberty City that you can plot your destination on to easily get from one side of the city to the other. There's all kinds of stat tracking that will tell you everything from how many bullets you've fired to how many fish you've fed and in-game options that offer all kinds of different tweaks to the interface and gameplay.

[ Full HD version | Low Bandwidth version ]

We weren't initially sure if this release was intentional, as we expected some amount of pre-release fanfare from Rockstar, but we are going to be working on a full review of this version of the game.

App Store Link: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, $9.99

Rockstar announces Grand Theft Auto and Beaterator for iPhone

Rockstar Games has announced two new apps it plans to release for the iPhone and the iPod touch. The games include Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars and Beaterator. Respectively, the first title is a new mobile game based on the Grand Theft Auto franchise while Beaterator is a music-making application which turns an iPhone or iPod touch into a musical instrument.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars follows the story of Huang Lee who travels to Liberty City after the death of his father. Lee explores the streets of the city while uncovering crime and corruption within the Triad crime syndicate. The game is also currently available for the Nintendo DS while a PSP version of the game is expected in the fall.

Beaterator follows the trend of new music applications for the iPhone and iPod touch which turn the handheld into a music making device. The application allows users to create musical backgrounds in additions to beats and songs. Thousands of loops and sounds are available through the application which will also be available for the PSP September 29th.

Both appls are expected to be available through the iTunes Apps Store some time this fall. You can read more about the games at the Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars and Beaterator websites.

Brian’s Opinion

Rockstar has made an impressive expansion into the handheld application market. In fact, the studio won the 2009 Develop Award for Best Handheld Game Studio. That’s a pretty good crown to wear, but with that crown will come some expectations from customers and fans.

It’s truly stunning how the first Grand Theft Auto game has expanded into a growing franchise for Rockstar. Sure, the studio received some bad press as a result of some of the content contained within the titles related to the franchise, but the fact of the matter is that people still bought the game and continue to do so. Honestly, it seems a little controversy has helped the franchise if anything.

I must admit that I’m a little surprised that Rockstar is offering a music making application for the iPhone. That’s the type of game/app that Rockstar doesn’t tend to dive into, but I suppose one could say there is a bit of a crossover between Grand Theft Auto and Beaterator since the music within Grand Theft Auto games has become as popular as the games themselves. Clearly, Rockstar wants to capitalize on this fact by allowing users to create their own soundtrack with Beaterator.

Crash Bandicoot Mutant Island

Crash Bandicoot Mutant Island

Mobile gamers will be interested to know that Crash is returning with another 2D side-scroller, Mutant Island. The game is being developed by Glu Mobile and it doesn’t look that different from the mobile version of Crash of the Titans. Mutant Island appears to be the latest in the line of mobile 2D Crash sidescrollers. Crash will retain his ability to control large mutants and harness their powers to progress. Platforming will be present and Crash will venture through different worlds, some of which can be seen in the screenshots above (a castle, a dungeon and a big ol’ tree, respectively). And the rest is speculation.

Quest for Knights Onrush for iPhone

Quest for Knights Onrush (icon)There’s something new for your iPhone, and it’s based on something great. If you enjoyed playing Knights Onrush, Chillingo’s tower defense game with a twist, you’ll like Quest for Knights Onrush, a free spin-off that will have you hack and slash your way through hordes of enemies “borrowed” from its tower defense counterpart. Unlike most other free games, Quest for Knights Onrush will surprise you with crisp graphics, smooth execution, and overall polish.

We reviewed Knights Onrush (free version, $2.99 full version, now reduced to $0.99 for a limited time) a while ago, labeling it as a “stick figures flicking tower defense game” with a twist that offers amusing ways of killing enemies. Although both games are set in the same medieval environment, Quest for Knights Onrush has a different gameplay and shares only characters and graphics with its tower defense counterpart.

Quest for Knights Onrush (screenshot 001)Think Zombieville with knights and swords on steroids, or Castle Crashers. Quest for Knights Onrush has nothing to do with the tower defense genre per se. Instead, you control one character tasked with the mission to force through hordes of enemies using only your sword. Chillingo told us you’ll be able to fight knights, swordsmen, wizards and ballistas, all of which will be well-known to you if you’ve played Knights Onrush. In addition, Quest for Knights Onrush will allow you to take advantage of the leveling system in order to fight as far as you can (hint: survival mode).

Conclusion: Can’t beat the price

Chillingo noted that part of the Knights Onrush gameplay will be actually included in Quest for Knights Onrush, but stressed that the two games follow different story lines, concepts, and mechanics, sharing only graphics and cartoony characters. Quest for Knights Onrush will be provided on a free of charge basis. It should be noted that Chilingo hopes to spin Quest into a full game, so the version posted for the App Store approval is basically a light version.

A premium version, according to the amount of downloads and gamers’ feedback, will include online scores, better AI, bosses, more enemies, objects, and abilities, in addition to multiple levels with different backgrounds and enemies, and three different heroes to choose from, each with unique abilities and leveling system. Meanwhile, search the App Store for “Quest for Knights Onrush” as the game is scheduled to appear soon.
