Leaked LG 2010 Q1 roadmap reveals 7 new phones

LG-Q1-2010-roadmapHello. What do we have here? Apparently, it’s a leaked image of LG’s 2010 Q1 roadmap! Yippee!

Unfortunately, other than the diverse collection of LG handset names – Wine2, Wine Jr., Goya, Stage, Mini, Sweet, and Cookie2 – there really isn’t much more to talk about at the moment…other than LG’s obsession interest with food-related names (think LG Chocolate).LG-Q1-2010-roadmap

Also, is it really a good idea to name a phone “Wine Junior”? “Here you go, son. Don’t drink and drive, but be sure to call your mother with your new WINE Junior when you get to the party.” Lets just hope that’s a codename.

No matter. 7 new LG phones, many of which have stupid delicious names, may or may not pop up in Q1 2010. Cheers!

Sprint LG Lotus 2 coming in January, will rock a touchscreen face?

LG Lotus 2

Be honest: the first time you saw the somewhat-short, somewhat-stout LG Lotus, did you think it would be successful enough to get a sequel? Looks like it was.

One of our sources just spilled the beans on what we’re tentatively calling the “Lotus 2″, for lack of a better name. It’s sounding a whole lot like the original so far, with just a few little tweaks thrown in for good measure.

LG Lotus 2

Here’s what we’re hearing:

  • Very similar form factor to the original – same square shape, same QWERTY keyboard
  • This model will support 32GB microSD cards, whereas the original Lotus only supported up to 12GB.
  • Tentative launch date is currently set for some time in January.
  • The screen on the outer face will still be there – but this time around, it’ll be a touchscreen. We’re not sure how much functionality they’ll be able to squeeze into a touchscreen of that size (even if they bump the screen size up to fill most of the face), so we’re guessing it’s more for novelty than anything.

LG Shows Off First Android Based Smartphone

LG Electronics has shown off its first Android based mobile phone, just a week after it announced plans for three new Windows Mobile based smartphones. The new android OS based LG-GW620 features a 3-inch full touchscreen and slide out QWERTY keypad.
"The LG-GW620 will appeal to first-time smartphone customers by offering a new and different kind of user experience," said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. "Our objective is to provide a wide selection of smartphones to satisfy the diverse preferences of today's consumers. This Android phone is just one of many smartphone models we plan to introduce worldwide in the years ahead."
In addition to the Android model, LG announced in early September that it will be introducing a minimum of 13 new smartphones over the next 16 months that utilize Microsoft's Windows Mobile. The newest release, version 6.5, was announced just last week.
The LG-GW620 will be available in the fourth quarter of this year in select European markets. Pricing and technical specifications are still to be confirmed.

LG to debut its first Android smartphone with social features in Q4

LG_GW620 (top left perspective, open)The newly announced LG-GW620, the first Android-powered smartphone from the South Korean consumer electronics giant, is scheduled for a Q4 launch. It’ll pack in a 3-inch touchscreen, slide-out full QWERTY keypad, and new social features targeting Facebook and Twitter fans.

LG has officially announced its Android foray with a brand new device somewhat cryptically named LG-GW620. It’s the first-ever Android smartphone for LG, the company that’s been heavily relying thus far on the Windows Mobile platform in its phones. The LG-GW620 also signals a change in direction towards a two-tier smartphone strategy that will see LG utilizing both Android and Windows Mobile in future devices.

The company provided little detail beyond stating that the phone will feature a 3-inch touchscreen and the full QWERTY slide-out keyboard. Promo images shown in this article shed a little more light, revealing a mini USB port, volume up and down buttons, the sleep/wake button, and a round iPhone-like button positioned below the display, alongside the Home and Back buttons.

There is also a stylus, indicating that the phone will not exclusively rely on a finger-based input after all. The QWERTY keypad slides out on the left, providing heavy message users with spacious keys for the physical, tactile-based input.

Dr. Skott Ahn, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, said that additional Android phones will follow in the years ahead, adding that the LG-GW620 will:

appeal to first-time smartphone customers by offering a new and different kind of user experience. Our objective is to provide a wide selection of smartphones to satisfy the diverse preferences of today’s consumers.

The LG phone will debut in select European markets in the fourth quarter of this year. The company is expected to post full specs ahead of the release. LG remained mum on whether it will bring the LG-GW620 to the U.S. market later this year. Last month, LG pledged to bring at least 13 new Windows Mobile smartphones by the end of 2010.

Christian’s Opinion

LG said in its press release that the LG-GW620 will benefit from Google-preloaded apps and services, highlighting a range of new social networking features as well. Common sense logic points to the Android 1.6 firmware that’s just around the corner. Also known as the Donut release, Android 1.6 will pack in a redesigned Android Market with app icons, longer descriptions, user reviews, and screenshots.

However, the social focus stressed in LG’s press release could as well indicate that the phone will run Android 2.0, code-named Eclair and due later this year, unless, of course, LG plans to provide social features via own apps built on top of Android. Android 2.0 is said to enable Facebook integration on the system level, fitting nicely into the LG-GW620’s social focus. In addition, the operating system will enable multi-touch gestures, advanced 3D graphics support necessary for console-quality games, universal search, text-to-speech, automated backups, faster performance, and a new camera app.

LG Chocolate BL40 launch night - impressions, photos

After having the exclusive opportunity of seeing first hand the brand new Black Label Series LG Chocolate BL40 last week, here’s my first impressions of the new phone from LG and also some photos and videos from that night. It was one of the best LG events I’ve ever attended, LG wanted the launch night to be extraordinary and to do that they invited UK designer Wayne Hemmingway to celebrate the launch of the BL40.

What every phonemaker wants to accomplish when they launch a new handset is for people to think that it is like no other. For the LG BL40, LG wanted its first impression to be the phone of the future, to have an iconic design which makes it standout and distinct from any other.

Personally, I think the BL40 has not only earned the badge of being the “new Chocolate” but its also achieved something quite special. When you see the new LG Chocolate BL40, you can sense that it rightfully sits on top of all three other Black Label Series phones LG has ever launched.

Of course, its unique 4” 21:9 panoramic widescreen is highly unconventional yet this gives the BL40 one of the best looking executive designs I’ve ever set my eyes on. Indeed, LG has taken a huge gamble with the redesign of the new LG Chocolate, but despite this, I believe its turned the table around and created a stunning (stylish) breakthrough.

We hope the video below works out alright, we’ve trimmed together a few clips to give the best results of this first look and hands on demo of the BL40.

For more details, do have a read of the official press release below and also our previous articles relating to the LG Chocolate BL40…

LG Electronics (LG), a global leader and technology innovator in mobile communications, today announced the worldwide retail release of the highly anticipated new Chocolate (LG-BL40). The stunning fourth handset of the Black Label Series will be available in Europe from mid-September before making its way around the world.

With the introduction of this bold new shape, the new Chocolate is essentially reinventing the way consumers view and use mobile phones. Designed with sleek sophistication, the strikingly unconventional 4-inch wide screen opens up an enlarged and more optimal space for “on-the-go” computing, allowing for an entirely new mobile experience that raises the bar of innovation.

Users will see things differently with the widened 21:9 panoramic display that establishes a new level of visual comfort for the reading of web pages and e-mail and dramatically brings videos and games to life with cinematic flair. Going wide also allows for the dual screen era to finally be brought to handsets for enhanced usability, which when combined with LG’s upgraded and intuitive S-Class UI brings a whole new meaning to the words “user friendly”.

“The new LG Chocolate will dramatically change the way we interact with our phones,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “The new Chocolate reflects the originality and sophistication of the Black Label Series and like its predecessor, we are confident that the new Chocolate will create its own legacy and further enhance our standing in the market.”

Beginning from the UK, the new LG Chocolate will be released across the Europe in September and will be expanded to the rest of the world from October 2009.
