The iPhone has yet another function it can perform thanks to a new application. You can now turn your iPhone or iPod touch into a musical instrument. The new application is called DopplerPad and is now available through the iTunes App Store.
The developer of DopplerPad has designed the application for use as a live performance and music production tool. DopplerPad offers up to 37 custom instruments for music lovers to choose from. The application also provides visual feedback with the music to make it easier to time overdubs and distinguish loops from one another.
Other features of the app include the ability to record and save loops in addition to using your microphone to records samples on the fly. You can also create rhythmic and melodic automation by moving your fingers around a musical touchpad. DopplerPad is available from the iTunes App Store for US$9.99.

Brian’s Opinion
I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before I walk into a coffee shop and see somebody playing their iPhone as a musical instrument. I love the creativity that has overtaken the applications that have been developed for the iPhone. Now we have the iPhone becoming a musical instrument as a result.
What makes DopplerPad an easier instrument to play more than most is its ability to incorporate visual feedback into the creation of music. Honestly, it’s the visual feedback that also makes the DopplerPad an interesting instrument to watch being played. In some respects you can say it’s a instrument of multiple senses.
I had an opportunity to play a few instruments during my years in school. For some reason, I’m not sure if that will be much of an advantage when it comes to DopplerPad. I think the application levels the playing field for experienced and beginner musicians alike.
