A digital camera inside a cell phone is not exceptional these days। It becomes a different case when a 5 Megapixel digital camera is integrated in a mobile phone. And although there are more handsets equipped with a 5 Megapixel digital camera, for example the Nokia N82, Samsung G800 and the Sony Ericsson K850i, there is a vast difference in the quality of the camera. The KU990 is the first 5 Megapixel cell phone of LG. It looks like LG is starting to take mobile photography seriously. The Viewty is the successor to the LG Prada. The latter was introduced in the beginning of 2007. The LG Viewty is up to date with its large touchscreen, 5 Megapixel digital camera and multimedia player. The LG Viewty comes in a compact black box including a headphone, charger, CD-ROM and USB cable. We were able to test the LG Viewty extensively and our findings of this digital camera with cell phone function can be read in our LG Viewty review.

It seems that LG has learned a lot from the LG Prada design. Neat curves, elegant black colour and some silver-colored accents are evidently present. When you place the Viewty horizontally on a surface and look at it from the back, the LG Viewty is the spitting image of a digital compact camera. An outsider will not recognize the mobile phone in it. Around the camera lens we find the scroll wheel. The scroll wheel is an innovation of LG and it means that no extra buttons are required for example for zooming in or out.

The LG Viewty has been equipped with a 3-inch 262,144 colour touchscreen monitor। Average colour reproduction is fine. When a colorful object is captured, the colours are not well rendered on the monitor at times. In bright sunlight it is difficult to see clearly what is on the monitor. In this case you will have to go into the shadow or create some shade yourself. The touchscreen monitor responds very well. I clearly noticed the difference with the LG Prada monitor that has a somewhat slower response now and then. Touching the touchscreen monitor is confirmed by a slight vibration so you know whether or not you pressed hard enough. The pen for the touchscreen monitor comes with the Viewty and can be attached to the handset by a cord.

When the cell phone is connected through ActiveSync it is a piece of cake to manage files like photos, music, ring tones and documents. The connection of my notebook through USB was reasonably fast; transferring 100MB took around 3.5 minutes.

It might take some time to get used to the menu of the LG Viewty. The right side of the menu contains four different categories. The different menu segments are appointed to these categories. When the correct category is found, the required function is found too within seconds. When a segment of the menu is touched rightly, it is confirmed by a quick vibration of the cell phone. The menu can be set to different styles, for example; white but in my opinion black fits the handset the best.

Music and movies can be played through the multimedia player of the Viewty। Songs and movies can be stored in play lists which makes it easy to find them again quickly. Operating the multimedia player is easy. The buttons are properly indicated as for which function they serve. The scroll wheel around the camera lens can be used to adjust the volume. The sound quality of the standard LG headset is fine; bass as well as high tones sound natural.

LG Viewty Conclusion
Y ou can say that the LG Viewty is a compact camera with integrated cell phone. Although there is still room for improvement, LG is on the right track. The functions are easy to operate and they do what they are supposed to do. The camera takes good pictures but noise is simply too evident at ISO 400 and ISO 800. Still high ISO values ensure that you don't have to miss an important photographic moment. The menu requires getting used to. Someone who worked with the LG Prada before will recognize the menu and therefore be able to work with the Viewty straight away as the menus of both handsets are almost equal. The scroll wheel around the lens is a real plus; it enables fast zooming and it lets you adjust the volume during a call. The LG Viewty is perfectly suited for everybody who wants a mobile phone with integrated high resolution camera, innovative techniques and neat design.
