What applications can I install in the current version of Classic?
Single PRCs and OTA-ready installation packages can be installed easily into the current version of Classic.
Applications that are delivered in a format other than a single PRC file, i.e. applications consisting of multiple PRC/PDB files, can also be installed in Classic, but may require additional steps, as described below.
How do I install single PRC and OTA-ready Palm OS applications into Classic?
Simply copy the PRC file into the ClassicApps folder on your Pre. This will put your PRC on the virtual SD card of Classic and it will appear in the "Internal" category of the Palm OS launcher next time you start Classic.
Here are the steps in more detail:
1. Connect your Pre to your computer with the USB cable and activate the USB Drive mode on your Pre
2. Copy the PRC file from your computer to the ClassicApps folder on your Pre
3. Disconnect your Pre from the USB port and launch Classic
Does Classic emulate an expansion memory card (SD card)?
The Palm Pre device does not have an SD card slot. However, Classic contains a full emulation of SD card related APIs. We have implemented this through a dedicated folder on the device's file system, which mimics the SD card. Palm OS application can access files and folders in this virtual storage card using the standard Palm OS VFS API, without any restrictions. This means that Palm OS apps can create, read, modify or delete files and folders on the virtual SD card just as they did on real SD card on real Palm OS devices (it can even be formatted through standard Palm OS API). From the Palm OS application's perspective, there is a fully functional SD card in Classic.
Is there a HotSync support in Classic?
Support for HotSync and conduits is one of the most requested features we have received so far, and we are looking into various ways for including the HotSync functionality in the upcoming versions of Classic.
Are the native Palm OS PIM databases (contacts, calendar, memos and tasks) supported in Classic?
Classic includes Palm OS Contacts, Calendar, Tasks and Memos apps and their databases so that the other apps relying on those databases can be used in Classic. Access to native webOS PIM databases is not supported at this time.
Does Classic have trial period?
Yes. Classic has a fully functional trial period of 7 days.
How can I get Classic?
Classic is available from the App Catalog application on your Pre. To get it, simply launch the App Catalog and type "Classic" in the search field.
What are the Classic Certified applications?
Classic Certified applications are Palm OS apps that are fully compatible with Classic and run well on a new powerful Palm Pre. Those apps will perform well and provide a familiar user experience. Even better, you can expect to see a significant improvement in the performance as Classic will be faster and more responsive than Treos and Centros were with Palm OS apps.
Can I run applications that are not Classic Certified?
Yes, you can. Classic will not limit execution of non-certified applications in any way.
How do I know if the application is Classic Certified?
Look for the Classic Certified Logo on the product detail pages within our app store.
I have Palm OS applications that I would like to continue using in Classic. Do I need to buy them again?
As far as Classic is concerned - you don't. Classic will enable you to run existing Palm OS applications without any modifications or limitations. However, if you have commercial Palm OS applications you may need to check the licenses you received from their developers for using it on a different/new device.
Can I run multiple Classic instances at the same time?
The design of webOS is such that it allows only a single instance of a given application to be run at a time. If you try to launch Classic from the main webOS launcher while another Classic is running, the system will simply switch to (bring to focus) the existing Classic instance.
What other restrictions exist in Classic, comparing to real Palm OS devices?
The following Palm OS features are not supported in Classic:
- Access to built-in camera
- Access to external hardware devices through Bluetooth, serial or USB ports. Access to network peripherals is supported.
- Palm OS development tools, like POSE, Gremlins, debuggers and similar
- Audio/video codecs - due to licensing limitations there are no built-in audio/video codecs in Classic (e.g. MP3, MP4, AMR and others available on Centro).
